Mount Michael Wine

Welcome to our tasting room

Nestled inside of the sheep shed and within its own sheep pen, you will find the Mount Michael Wines tasting space, operated by the Buzzstop.

Treat yourself to a self-guided tasting flight of Mount Michael Wines or The Mountaineer Range or book in for a full guided tasting with a member of the Mount Michael team.

The Tasting room is open from 9am-3pm, or by appointment for after hours or groups, we recommend you book for groups of 5 or more during peak seasons.

Mount Michael is the southernmost peak of the Pisa Range and acts as a guardian to the Kawarau Gorge and the entrance to the Cromwell Basin, overlooking the sub-regions in which our wines are grown. Like the mountain, we have a pioneering spirit with a rich history of planting and making wines in Central Otago dating back to 1994.

Present day - not much has changed, we are still exploring the region in pursuit of perfect growing conditions and flawless fruit while discovering new and evolving wine making techniques to continue to produce boutique, handcrafted Pinot Noirs, Pinot Gris and Pinot Rose.

Meet Our Winemaker

Winemaker Jody Pagey will celebrate 2020 as his 22nd vintage and his 24thin Central Otago.

Jody’s winemaking philosophy is one of restraint and his defining moment came while studying and working under Francois Millet from Domaine Comte de Vogue. Regarded as the greatest-estate in Chambolle Musigny, it was here that Jody found his passion for Pinot Noir and the respectful art of celebrating the season by understanding the fruit and then translating that into wine that speaks of its origin.

Mount Michael is the southernmost peak of the Pisa Range and acts as a guardian of the Kawarau Gorge. Together with Mount Difficulty these prominent peaks guard the entrance to the Cromwell Basin and overlook the subregions in which our wines are grown.

Like the mountain, we have a pioneering spirit with a rich history of planting and making wines in Central Otago dating back to 1994. Present day – not much has changed, we are still exploring the region in pursuit of perfect growing conditions and flawless fruit while discovering new and evolving wine making techniques to continue to produce boutique, handcrafted Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Rosé.

2019 Pinot Rose

Sub-region: Gibbston.
Gold –4.5 star - Vegan .
Made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes that were hand harvested from a single site in the cooler Gibbston sub-region.
Classic Central Otago Pinot Noir Rose on the nose with pronounced candyfloss, strawberries and cream. Bursting with fruit intensity on the palate this wine is packed with fresh strawberry, crunchy apricot and ripe stone fruit flavours. A Rose made for instant enjoyment, the length and fruit weight reflect the quality of fruit used to craft this perfect summer wine. Prefect served well chilled on a hot summer’s day.

2018 Pinot Gris

Sub-Region: Gibbston Gold, Vegan

Gibbston is one of the cooler, later ripening regions of Central Otago. Early Picking of the fruit and cool fermentation allows us to capture the crisp freshness and vibrant acidity reflective of Pinot Gris from this area.
Complex and instantly engaging aromas of grapefruit, fresh pear, citrus blossom and white pepper give way to further complexity on the palate with an intense core of pristine fruit carried along by mouth-watering minerality and great texture. Partial barrel fermentation has given a touch of spice and depth of body.

2017 Pinot Noir

Sub-Region: Bendigo Gold
Made with hand harvested grapes from a single Bendigo vineyard site, the rock reflected heat from this special sub-region helps to create wines of great intensity and depth of flavour.
The 2017 vintage is a beautifully balanced, classic Central Otago Pinot Noir. Packed full of red berry notes and savory characteristics, beautifully soft and supple on the palate, with a long lingering finish. Made in tiny quantities and aged for 12 months in French Oak, this wine is drinking superbly but you will be rewarded with further cellaring.

2014 Bessies Block Reserve Pinot Noir

Sub-Region: Lowburn

In 2004 the first Mount Michael Reserve Pinot Noir was crafted and named after a most loved “employee”, Bessie. A Fox terrier and rabbit hunter of legend, she was vineyard supervisor for many years. 2014 marked the 10th and last year in a generation of this wine.

Having aged in our wine library and now drinking wonderfully, this wine shows a complex nose of dark fruits and sweet spices. Perfect Lowburn fruit has provided a riper style of Pinot Noir that reflects the stunning 2014 summer in Central Otago. With well-integrated tannin, and an endless finish and a purity of fruit, the 2014 Bessie’s Block offers the chance to taste a beautifully made Central Otago Pinot Noir in its absolute prime.
